Quietly in Bloom: The Painted World of Yip Wing-wai
I am honored to present these works, which have been preserved by the family for many years and are now being shown to the public together on this scale for the first time. For me, curating is not simply a matter of hanging paintings on walls; it is about creating a space in which images that have long been quietly kept can encounter their viewers. I hope visitors will see not only the personal story of a Hong Kong artist, but also a journey shaped by artistic inheritance, city life, migration, memory, and a sustained commitment to making art.
I am especially grateful to Candice, Mr. Yip Wing Wai’s daughter, and her family for their trust in allowing me to work closely with this long-preserved group of paintings and to curate this exhibition of Mr. Yip’s work. Their trust has made possible not only an exhibition, but also a deeper understanding of the artist’s different creative periods through the works themselves, family memories, and related materials.
Through Quietly in Bloom, I hope that more audiences will come to know Yip Wing Wai’s paintings and the artistic language he developed across different places and stages of life—from his watercolour studies of Hong Kong streets in the 1960s to the vividly coloured and imaginative inner landscapes of his years in the United States. I also hope that this exhibition may serve as a beginning, making his artistic life and distinctive painted world easier to encounter, understand, document, and discuss in the years to come.
From the attentive and observant gaze of his Hong Kong street watercolours to the richly coloured inner landscapes of mountains and seas, Yip Wing Wai left behind a painted world that still awaits renewed attention. Quietly in Bloom seeks to make that world visible in a fuller way for the first time, inviting every visitor to find within it their own memories, imagination, and response.
